Few tips that can help you negotiate better if the salary offer is below your expectations

“Thank you for the offer. Because you made the offer, I assume you’ve decided I’m the ideal candidate. Can you help me understand how I am the ideal candidate, but merit __% below market?”

“We spoke about a salary range. Your offer is below the top end of that range. Can you help me understand why you chose to make an offer, but valued me less than the top of the range?”

“Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately, it is meaningfully lower than both the market and my expectations, so I need to politely decline.”

Stay neutral and approachable. But don’t be timid, and don’t negotiate against yourself, he says.
